The Many Benefits of Attending Summer Camp

​For many Americans, summer camp represents a fond and influential memory from childhood. Studies indicate that about 55 percent of children in the United States attend a structured summer camp program at some point in their lives. This includes 11 percent of children who go to a sleep-away camp. Children in the US can enjoy many benefits from attending a day camp or sleep-away summer camp program.

In modern times, one of the biggest benefits of going to summer camp is the opportunity to get away from technology, which can often feel omnipresent in a young person's life. An article published by CNBC stated that more than 90 percent of American adolescents have a smartphone by the age of 14. Excessive technology use has various negative intellectual and mental health effects, but many youths describe feeling trapped in using this technology, whether it comes from peer pressure or not knowing what activities to participate in if they are not playing games, watching videos, or talking with their friends.

Summer camp programs, especially sleep-away camps, provide countless distractions from technology, and may either institute technology limitations or lack the signal needed to use smartphone apps and games. Instead, children can engage in genuine human interactions, including with campers from different parts of the country or even the world, allowing young Americans to broaden their cultural knowledge.

Similarly, camp affords children the opportunity to break away from stressful home and school schedules and relax in a calming outdoor environment. While summer camp programs consist of many activities, children can select and engage in these pastimes at their leisure, and camp activities generally involve arts and crafts projects or physical activities in natural environments, both of which contribute to mental wellness. Summer camps also allow campers to take time for themselves, whether that means sitting around a campfire and talking to friends or lying in a hammock with a good book.

The benefits of spending time in green spaces cannot be overstated. Ample research shows that children who spend time outdoors are less likely to suffer from excessive stress and anxiety. While time spent in nature contributes to general mental wellness, summer camps often help campers learn about unique natural environments, providing insights into local flora and fauna or the history of America's wild rivers, mountain chains, and forests.

Of course, many adults look back on their day camp and sleep-away experiences and think of the friendships they formed, some of which can last a lifetime. As mentioned, children can make friends with people they would otherwise never meet, including people from different states and countries, campers of different ages, and other unique bonds.

Making friends is just one example of how summer camp programs help children step outside of their comfort zones and engage in new experiences. Challenges come in all shapes and sizes at camp, from taking on a thrilling ropes course or zipline to developing a new skill or hobby. These opportunities can instill young campers with confidence, self-esteem, and independence, among other qualities that can benefit them throughout their lives.

Finally, children may uncover lifelong passions at camp. In addition to the aforementioned art programs and the many outdoor activities in which campers can engage, some campers may become passionate about camp itself and pursue a career as a camp counselor or as an operator of youth community programs.
